Purbeck Film Festival Open Air Cinema: West Side Story
The UK’s longest running rural and coastal film festival
West Side Story (12A)
This is the recent 2021 version of the classic musical West Side Story by Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim (who unfortunately died three days before the premiere).
It is set in the poorer parts of New York in the 1950s as gangs of wayward youths battle for dominance of the district. In this tinderbox, troubled but sensitive Tony meets and immediately falls for Maria – but she is from the other side of the tracks…
The main star of this film is the living, breathing, swirling recreation of New York City in the 50s. It features some of the most ambitious and complicated choreography ever seen on film, dwarfing even the highly acclaimed 1961 film. It was a pet project of legendary director Steven Spielberg, who saw the original film as a young child and was greatly moved by it. To cast Maria, Spielberg put out a nationwide casting call that received over 30,000 applicants. Rachel Zegler won out over all of them and her natural and still performance is a highlight of the film.
This film has become the definitive version of one of the greatest of all musicals; one that still packs a huge emotional punch and features some sequences that will take your breath away. A must see on the big screen with an audience to get the full impact of the songs and choreography – and what better setting than beautiful Corfe Castle?
Event Information: Castle gates open at 7:30pm . Film starts approximately 8:45pm
Purbeck Film Festival
Supported by the BFI and its South West Regional Hub the Purbeck Film Festival has, in its 24 years, continued to grow in terms of venues and audience numbers. Our primary aim is to provide a rich variety of cinematic experiences across a rural area which does not have easy access to foreign language, independent and classic films.
