About the Wareham and District Archaeology and Local History Society
The Wareham and District Archaeology & Local History Society is a friendly group of like-minded people from all walks of life, who are brought together by our shared interest in archaeology, local history and heritage. The society offers a diverse lecture programme of ten monthly meetings, from September through to June each year. Our speakers vary from university lecturers to world-renowned authorities. We also organise visits and guided walks during the summer months.

18th October John Smith: Rockbourne Roman Villa
In 1956 excavation work revealed a Roman villa built on the remains of a Late Iron Age Celtic homestead. The site was occupied continuously throughout the Roman period and only fell out of use in the late 4th or early 5th century.
15th November Andrew Morgan: In search of the Anglo-Saxon shire boundary between Dorset and Hampshire – from Bokerley Dyke to the coast
Inspired by WG Hoskins who recognised that “ boundaries are the most ancient features in the English landscape, the Dorset County Boundary Research Group has studied the Dorset County Boundary, using extensive field work, Anglo-Saxon charters, old maps and historical documentation.
6th December Tim Darvill: Stonehenge – What’s New – A decade of science and speculation
Stonehenge and the monuments in its surrounding landscape are the subject of numerous ongoing research projects as well as a source of constant speculation. This talk will critically review some of the recent literature and focus on advances in the phasing of the structures represented, the sources of the materials used, and how the place was used at different stages in its development.
