Careys Secret Garden: Woodcraft Course
Birch Bark Containers
Bark containers are one of, if not the oldest way to contain foodstuffs, liquids & other goods. In this workshop, we will be using methods and materials that span back thousands of years into pre-history to create a beautiful, strong & sustainable container from Birch Bark.
This style of container is possibly my favourite. No glue, no nails, no modern materials. An ingenious method of making which involves clever finger tab joints and friction. An immensely satisfying experience.
A history of the use of bark, roots & wood, plus examples of harvesting, storing, and working with these materials will lead us up to the main task of the day, creating your very own natural Tupperware.
Jack Fazey has been working with wood for over 10 years, carving for about 8 years, and teaching for even longer. In his safe, competent hands you will be guided through the process to create your own birch bark container. Suitable for absolute beginners as well as those who may already have some experience, rest assured you will be guided through each step slowly, thoroughly & enjoyably!
Participants can expect to finish the day with a brand new hobby to continue at home as well as their very own hand-crafted strong & sustainable container from Birch Bark.
All tools & wood provided
These workshops are for adults only, however, children from age 16+ may attend if joined by a participating adult.
