Careys Secret Garden: Bird Feeder Workshop
Come and spend the day under expert tuition to create three willow bird feeders
The more you feed the birds during nesting season, the less time the parents will need to stay away from the nest foraging for food. With bird feeders supplementing natural food sources, birds have a reliable, plentiful source of food to keep them well fed and thriving.
Come and spend the day under expert tuition to create three willow bird feeders, One to fill with fat balls, one for suet and nuts and another for kitchen scraps and seeds. During the day you will learn how the willow is grown, harvested and processed, the tools of the trade and you will learn several different weaving techniques. You will have the opportunity to use willow with the bark on, boiled/striped willow and steamed willow, all of these processes create different colours and textures.
Event leader, Yanina Stockings has been inspired by nature, after growing up in the Highlands of Scotland surrounded by the ancient Caledonian pine forests. With a BSc Hons in conservation, sustainability is important and all of her willow and rush is sourced here in the south of England and where possible Yanina harvests her own locally. She trained as a teacher at Southampton University in 2009 and now runs many varied willow workshops making this ancient rural craft accessible to everyone.
A hot drink will be provided but please bring your own lunch or purchase a delicious light lunch, cake or ice cream from the Secret Salt Pig.
